The strikethrough feature allows staff to mark an observation as no longer valid while preserving the original note text and a complete audit trail.
This is useful when a note needs to be voided without being removed from the resident's record.
Feature Overview
Applying a strikethrough is different from editing or deleting an observation. When a strikethrough is applied:
- The original note text is preserved and remains visible with a visual strikethrough applied.
- A written reason is required and displays inline beneath the struck note for anyone viewing it in ALIS.
- The strikethrough reason appears in ALIS only and does not print on PDF exports.
- A complete audit trail is maintained.
How to Enable Strikethrough
Before enabling this feature, administrators should work with their ALIS Team to determine which security roles should have access.
Enable the setting:
- In Company Settings → General Preferences, enable "Allow users to strikethrough Observations."
This step can be completed by ALIS or a Company Admin.
Assign one or both permissions to user roles (completed by ALIS only):
- "Strikethrough Observations" allows users to apply a strikethrough to observations they authored. The option will not appear on notes written by other staff members.
- "Undo Strikethrough Observations" allows users to reverse a strikethrough. The Nurse role cannot undo by default.
To update permissions, your company administrator must contact your Account Manager or our ALIS Customer Success Team.
How to Apply a Strikethrough
- Navigate to the observation from the Observation Center or the Resident Profile → Observations section.
- Locate the note and click on the strikethrough icon.
- ⚠️If this option is not visible, the note was not authored by you, or your security role does not have the strikethrough permission.
- Enter a written reason in the field provided. A reason is required; the strikethrough cannot be saved without one.
- Click Strikethrough to apply.
Once saved, the original note text displays with a visual strikethrough, and the reason appears inline beneath it for all staff viewing the note.
Strikethrough on Observations Associated with Multiple Residents
If the observation was originally posted to multiple residents at once (a grouped observation), the strikethrough applies to all copies across all associated residents.
How to Undo a Strikethrough
Only users with permission can reverse a strikethrough.
- Locate the struckthrough note in the Observation Center or Resident Profile → Observations section.
- Select the undo icon on the note.
- Click Undo to restore the observation.
⚠️ Important: If the original observation was grouped across multiple residents, the undo must be performed individually for each resident on their respective profile.
