Cycle-based scheduling (e.g., "5 days on, 2 days off") is commonly required for specialized treatments like oncology medications. Use this guide to help with setting up cycle-based schedules and ensuring the medication appears correctly on the resident’s MAR.
Because cycle-based schedules are complex, they require manual setup—similar to a sliding scale order.
Depending on how you are managing the medication in ALIS, there are two distinct locations for configuring a cycle-based schedule:
Pharmacy Inbox: When processing an incoming order. Read this guide for more information: How to Process Incoming Orders.
Manage Orders: When manually adding a new order or editing an existing one (Routines and Treatments only). Read this guide for more information: How to manually add a new order (Routine, PRN, Treatment, Informational).
Configure the On/Off Schedule
Configure the cycle-based schedule in the Scheduling & Dosage section of the process/add/edit order page.
Follow these steps:
Click the Interval dropdown menu.
Select the option 'N Days On, N Days Off'.
-
Define the On/Off Cycle:
Enter the number of days the medication is active (On).
Enter the number of days the medication is inactive (Off).
-
Confirm the Start Date: The start of the "On" cycle begins automatically based on the Start Date.
Note: The Start Date cannot be updated once an order is first processed from the pharmacy inbox.
Confirm the administration Time(s): Ensure you have selected the correct shift/times for administration.
Click Process/Update Order.
Schedule Verification
After processing or updating an order, always review the resident's MAR. This allows you to verify that the "On" days align with the prescriber's intent.
You can see a high-level view of the order schedule on a resident's Manage Orders page:
