A resident may have multiple orders on their chart containing Acetaminophen. ALIS gives us a way to keep track of the quantity of Acetaminophen administered so that residents will not exceed 3,000 mg within 24 hours.
All we have to do to track the Acetaminophen is make a small update for the orders containing it. This results in notifications showing on Pass Meds and for PRNs if a resident is nearing or has reached the limit.
Once a resident reaches 2,500 mg, an orange notification displays this as a warning not to exceed 3,000 mg.
If a resident has reached 3,000 mg, a red notification displays and the medication documentation options are hidden.
- If you click Skip Administration, the Exception option "Other" is selected with the text of the notification prefilled as a reason.
- There is also Pass Anyway button which will display the medication documentation options as usual.
Tracking Setup
On your resident's Manage Orders page, click to edit any order containing Acetaminophen. Do this for any Routine or PRN orders.
In the Scheduling section of the Edit Order page, find the Track Acetaminophen option and set this to Yes. Type the amount of Acetaminophen Per Unit in MG. If the unit of the order is TABS, this number should be the amount of Acetaminophen contained in one tablet.
Click Update at the bottom of the page to save this, and repeat for all orders containing Acetaminophen.
Going forward, set this up for all new orders either from the Process Order page in Pharmacies, or when you manually add an order on Manage Orders.
