Nursing Delegations lets a licensed nurse formally delegate a clinical task, such as administering a medication via pen or performing a fingerstick blood glucose check, to non-licensed staff.
Nursing Delegations is a Limited Release feature and is off by default. To enable it for your community, contact your Account Manager.
How to Enable Nursing Delegations
Getting a community ready to use Nurse Delegations happens in three steps:
Step 1: ALIS enables the feature
Nurse Delegations is behind an entitlement and stays hidden from the navigation until it is turned on for your company. Contact your Account Manager to request access.
Step 2: Configure staff security role permissions
Once the feature is enabled, an administrator sets which roles can see and act on delegations. Permissions are set on the security role and can be tuned so each role sees only what it needs.
At a high level, there are two levels of access:
- View access lets a user see delegation data and reports without changing anything. Action buttons stay hidden. This is typically the right fit for Med Techs, who mainly need to see and sign what has been assigned to them.
- Manage access lets a user act on delegations: start them, complete assessments, assign and train staff, release, rescind, reevaluate, and discontinue. This is typically scoped to Nurses and Administrators, who own the workflow.
Step 3: Configure assessment templates and delegation types
With permissions in place, an administrator configures the delegation types the community will use. This is a one-time setup per community and can be copied to other communities if needed. Each delegation type pairs an assessment template (the resident-specific form the nurse fills out) with a delegation form (the staff training and attestation form).
Add an assessment template
- Go to Settings > Staff Settings.
- Scroll down to the Delegation Assessment Templates section.
- Click + Add Assessment Template.
- Type a Name for the assessment.
- Browse and upload the marked-up assessment form.
- Click Create to save.
Add delegation types
- Go to the Delegation Types section.
- Click Add Type.
- Type the delegation Name, meaning the task or medication being delegated (for example, "Administration of Bydureon via Pen").
- Select the Nurse Resident Assessment Template that should be completed before this delegation is assigned.
- Upload the marked-up delegation form for this type.
- Save.
The expiration period is chosen by the nurse at the moment each delegation is released, so you don't set a default here in settings. This lets a type like Fingerstick Blood Glucose carry a longer window than a medication delegation.
Access the Nurse Delegations workflow
Once enabled, the Nurse Delegations feature lives under the Staff menu. You can only work with delegations for communities you are assigned to on your staff profile. If you oversee more than one community, you'll be able to switch between them from inside the Delegations Center.
