Use this guide to learn how to record vitals efficiently in ALIS. You can record multiple vitals checks for selected residents at once using the Bulk Vitals tool, or capture them directly while documenting resident observations.
Record Single (PRN) Vital
Use this method to quickly record a single, unscheduled vital check for one resident directly from the Dashboard.
Select the Record Single Vital icon on the dashboard (this is also accessible in Scheduled Vitals).
In the pop-up that appears, select the Resident and the specific Vital Type you wish to record.
Once the vital type is selected, the window will expand. Enter the Vital Value, Date, Time, and any Notes.
(Optional): If you need to record more vitals immediately after this one, check the box for Record Another PRN Vital next to the submit button.
Click Submit to save the record.
Bulk Record Vitals
Use this method to quickly record vitals for one or multiple residents on the fly.
From your Dashboard, locate and click the Bulk Vitals icon.
-
Use the Residents dropdown menu in the top left to select who you are recording for.
Search: Type a name to find a specific person.
Multi-select: Select groups by Product Type or use Select All.
Once you have selected residents, you can use the Red X to remove a resident from the list. You can also use the +Add 5 More button to add blank rows if needed.
Use the Vitals to Record menu (top center) to choose which vital types to display (e.g., Weight, Blood Pressure, Temperature). You can Select All or choose specific ones.
Type the values into the fields that populate next to each resident's name. If you leave a field blank for any resident, ALIS will ignore it and only save the values you entered.
-
Review Details:
Date/Time: Update the "Vitals recorded on" fields if the record is for a past time.
Notes: Check the Show Notes checkbox (top right) to create a text box next to each record for adding notes.
Click the Record Vitals button to save your entry.
Record Vitals in Pass Meds
There are two ways vitals checks appear and are recorded in Pass Meds:
-
As a prerequisite to order administration:
This occurs when a medication order requires a specific vital check before administration (e.g., checking Blood Glucose levels prior to administering Insulin).
You will be prompted to record this value before you can complete the administration record.
-
As a scheduled Treatment order:
This occurs when a vital check is scheduled as its own standalone order (e.g., "Daily Blood Pressure").
For information on creating these orders, refer to the How to Schedule Vitals as Treatments guide.
Record Vitals in Observation Notes
You can capture vitals while recording general resident observations.
Your community can allow certain staff record vitals when adding an Observation. For assistance with security role permissions, contact your Account Manager or our ALIS Customer Success Team.
Record Scheduled Vitals
- Click on the Scheduled Vitals dashboard icon.
- In the Scheduled Tab, you will automatically be in the "Current" shift time frame.
- In the "Not Recorded" sub-tab, locate a resident and click the Record button.
- If a resident refused the vitals check, click the Refuse button.
- Fill in the specific vital value, and update the Date, Time, and Notes fields if needed.
- Click Submit to save.
For more information on Scheduled Vitals, refer to this How to use Scheduled Vitals guide.
Record Vitals in Observation Notes
It is possible to configure staff security roles to be able to record vitals when creating an Observation note. For assistance with updating staff permissions, contact your Account Manager or the ALIS Customer Success Team.
For more information about vitals entry in Observations, refer to this Observations Reference Guide.
View or edit recorded Vitals
The location for editing an incorrect vital entry depends on where it was originally recorded (e.g., in Pass Meds vs. the Dashboard). For a complete breakdown of where to find and fix errors, refer to this How to edit recorded Vitals guide.
Reports
When staff enter vitals from any location in ALIS (Dashboard, Pass Meds, or Observations), all data is automatically added to the resident's health chart and the Vital Sign Details and Vital Sign Summary reports.
