In instances where an order is administered on a schedule, but is also available as a PRN, ALIS has a function to "clone" the order to avoid unnecessary data entry. This is the most common example of using the clone function, but it can be useful in many scenarios.
Here is how to Clone a Medication, Treatment, or PRN:
- Access the resident's Manage Orders page.
- To the right of the medication, treatment or PRN you would like to clone, click on the Options menu and select Clone.
- In the resulting pop-up, click whether to clone the order to a Medication, PRN, or Treatment order.
- On the next page, in the instance when there are differences between the clone and the original, you will have the opportunity to update the details for the cloned order. Make any desired edits and when you are finished, click Create Order at the bottom right of the page.
Some other use cases of the clone feature are:
When cloning a pharmacy-sent order, the cloned order is NOT linked to the pharmacy. Situations vary, but you may want to reach out to the pharmacy to have them re-process instead of cloning the order.
- You manually added an order as a Routine (for example, Acetaminophen) and it also needs to be a PRN, so you clone it to cut down on manual entry and save time.
- A pharmacy-sent order was processed as a Routine, but it's actually supposed to be a PRN order.
- A pharmacy-sent Routine order has a PRN component that also needs to be on the MAR as such (meaning, the pharmacy did not send it as a true split order for processing both as distinct schedules/frequencies).
- An order was accidentally or incorrectly DC'd (discontinued) and you need it back on the resident's MAR quickly, which cloning handles.
