Use Schedule Hold to pause administration of a resident's medication. Holding an order removes it from the Pass Meds page until the hold ends. You can start a hold immediately or schedule it in advance for a planned event such as a surgery, and you can set an end date and time so the order returns to the med pass automatically when the resident should resume.
Before you begin
Holds are managed on the resident's Manage Orders page. The buttons and options available to you depend on your community's settings and your security role.
For assistance, contact your Account Manager or our ALIS Customer Success Team.
Hold a single order
- On the resident's Manage Orders page, find the order and click Options.
- Click Schedule Hold.
- Enter a Start Hold date and time.
- Enter an End Hold date and time.
- Enter a Reason for the hold. A reason is required.
- Click Create Hold.
💡Tip: Always add an End Hold date and time. The order returns to the med pass at that time, so the resident does not accidentally miss a dose.
Hold all orders at once
- On the resident's Manage Orders page, click More near the top (next to Physician Orders).
- Choose one:
- Hold All Meds & Treatments holds every scheduled order that shows in Pass Meds.
- Hold All PRNs holds all PRN orders so none can be given.
- In the pop-up, enter a Start Hold time, an optional End Hold time, and a required Reason.
- Click Hold.
Manage a scheduled hold
After a hold is scheduled, open the order's Options menu to:
- Edit Hold to change the hold details.
- Delete Hold to cancel a hold that has not started yet.
- Stop Hold to end a hold that is in progress.
Active holds can be stopped by clicking Stop All Holds (at the top of the page), or Stop Hold on the individual order.
How a hold displays on printed documents
When a medication is on an active hold, ALIS flags it on printed clinical documents so the hold is clear to anyone reviewing them, including during emergencies and state surveys.
- On the MAR, a held routine or PRN medication displays "ON HOLD SINCE" label with the date the hold began, next to the medication.
- On the Physician's Order Report, a held medication displays an "ON HOLD SINCE" label with the date the hold began.
- In the Emergency Packet (when the MAR and/or Physician's Order Report are included).
- Each held administration time also displays an uppercase "H" in the MAR boxes. See the Manage Orders Reference Guide for the full MAR symbol key.
Hold or Disable?
Disable also removes an order from Pass Meds, but it has no scheduling. Use Schedule Hold whenever you need the order to return to the med pass at a specific time.
