ALIS integrates with the PioneerRx software which is used by some pharmacies. This guide is for communities whose pharmacy integration is with a pharmacy using this software. Learn about what to expect from order messages in ALIS that are sent from PioneerRx.
About the PioneerRx Integration
- To connect PioneerRx's offline software with ALIS, the pharmacy must install our ALIS Rx Appliance. This secure program runs on their private network, acting as a bridge to automatically monitor and send prescription data to us. This setup provides a simple alternative to more complex connection methods.
- This connection type supports eFax refills only. For more information, refer to this eFax Refills guide.
- As with all pharmacy integrations, there will be certain expected capabilities as well as limitations in terms of what data pulls through to specific fields in the Order Processing page based on how the pharmacy is able to key in orders with their interface software. For more general information on processing orders, refer to this How to Process Incoming Order Messages guide.
Process Orders with PioneerRx
If you currently or previously have had another pharmacy integration in ALIS with pharmacy software that is not PioneerRx, it is important to note that there will be differences in how the order messages appear. Some fields may or may not automatically populate when you go to process an order with PioneerRx that automatically populate with your other pharmacy connection.
The below tables highlight which fields you should expect to automatically populate ("Yes") and those that do not automatically populate ("No") with the PioneerRx integration.
Order Information Section
| Medication Name | RX NDC | Prescriber | Equivalent to |
| Yes | Yes | No |
*Yes *While the "Equivalent to" field automatically populates, the carrot ("^") remains included. |
Order Details Section
| Route | Instructions |
| Yes | Yes |
Scheduling & Dosage Section
| Drug Unit of Measurement | Start & End Dates | Interval & Time (Routines) |
|
*Yes *Based on how these are translated, you may need to add them manually to accurately match the order. |
*No *Start dates are not required by PioneerRx, and therefore it is likely that orders will not include this information. |
*Yes *Based on how these are translated, you may need to update them manually to accurately match the order scheduling details. |
Order Processing Solutions
For fields that do not populate automatically or may occasionally require your correction, we have outlined solutions aimed to ensure you can efficiently capture all necessary details for your orders.
Prescriber
Prescriber information do not automatically populate in the top right Prescriber field when you go to process an order. While prescriber information is not technically required in ALIS for you to process the order, it is strongly recommended to include here.
To add prescriber details to this order, you must use the "Update prescriber for this order" section at the bottom of the Order Information section.
- Use Existing - If you have already added this resident's prescriber to your Community Contacts, then use the Prescriber dropdown menu and select the correct prescriber name. For more information on creating Community Contacts, refer to this How to Add Community Contacts guide.
- Create New - If you need to add a prescriber's information, move the toggle to Create New and add the contact details. Refresh the page after adding the contact, and the contact's name will appear in the list for you to select. This also automatically saves this prescriber to your Community Contacts for future use.
Drug Unit of Measurement
The Drug Unit of Measurement field populates accurately for orders that are tablets (TABS) and capsules (CAPS), in which case you do not need to edit this field.
For other orders' drug units of measurements, such as powders (POWD) or injectables (INJ), the field may not populate anything. In these cases, you will have to manually select the abbreviation unit from this dropdown menu. You can also click on the link to this Drug Units of Measurement Abbreviations guide below the dropdown to see descriptions for the 156 abbreviations found on this menu.
Start & End Dates
The start and end dates do not automatically populate in the corresponding fields. Therefore, it is important to review the order prescription information closely and input the date(s) here when you process an order for the first time.
The Start Date field is required to be able to process the order, and it also cannot be edited once the order is processed.
The End Date typically does not need to be edited for most routine orders, and it is not advised to input an end date unless necessary for an order. The order automatically falls off of the MAR on the end date entered here.
Interval & Time (Routines Only)
There is no way to standardize the data entry practices for Timing/Quantity (TQ1) segments across pharmacies that use PioneerRx due to their integration type, and therefore these time components of the order may not match the hours of administration.
The interval populates accurately for orders needing to be administered daily. However, it is possible that other non-daily orders (i.e., "Every N Day") do not. The time also populates, however the field(s) most likely will need to be adjusted further.
To update the order, use the Interval and Time dropdown menus to set the correct cadence of administration.
