PRN Nurse Approvals is an optional setting that requires clinical staff to document the approver name and method of approval when administering PRN medications.
Enable Approvers and Settings
In order for a Nurse or clinical administrator to be set as an Approver, they need to be assigned a specific security role permission. This permission must be configured by the ALIS team. Once security roles are configured, the PRN Nurse Approvals setting can then be enabled for each community in Company Settings. For assistance, contact your Account Manager or our ALIS Customer Success Team.
To update your own Company Settings, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to Settings > Company.
- Scroll down to the PRN Nurse Approval Settings section of the page.
- Identify which community or communities you wish to enable the setting for, and click Enable. This automatically turns on the feature in any area of ALIS where you can record a PRN administration.
Approval in Administer PRNs
To administer a PRN medication, navigate to the Administer PRNs or Pass Meds page. For more general information on PRN administration, refer to this How to Record PRNs and PRN Outcomes guide.
When the PRN Nurse Approvals setting is enabled for your community, the Approver and Approval Method dropdown menus will appear as newly required fields when staff go to administer a PRN:
- Use the Approver dropdown menu to select a staff member's name from the list. Remember that the specific security role permission must be assigned to a staff member in order for their name to appear on this dropdown.
- Then, select an option from the Approval Method dropdown menu to indicate how the Approver gave the approval for PRN administration.
- Once the Approver and Approval method have been select and all required fields completed, click Record PRN to document administration.
PRN Administration Report
Easily access all PRN approval details for your community in reports.
- Navigate to Reports > Medication Reports > PRN Administration.
- With the PRN Nurse Approval setting enabled, the report contains an Approval Details column. This column displays the staff member name that was selected as the Approver as well as the Approval Method.
