The Barcode Scanning feature enhances medication safety by ensuring a direct match between the physical prescription and the ALIS eMAR. Use this guide to learn about available Barcode Scanning settings that can be configured.
Enable Barcode Scanning
Barcode Scanning is behind an entitlement and requires an ALIS team member to enable it. The full enablement process typically takes around 2-3 weeks, however timing is dependent on testing and may vary based on your pharmacy's barcoding configurations.
For steps on how to complete the enablement process, refer to this Barcode Scanning Reference Guide.
Once the feature is enabled, the ALIS team will typically configure Barcode Settings for your team. It is always recommended that you consult your Account Manager or our ALIS Customer Success Team other Barcode Scanning best practices prior to adjusting these settings.
Barcode Scanning Settings
Navigate to Settings > Medications > Barcode Scanning tab.
Inventory Scanning
When enabled, this turns on the Check In Orders feature/page.
For more information, refer to this Check In Orders with Barcode Scanning guide.
Med Pass Scanning
When enabled, this turns on Barcode Scanning in Pass Meds.
For more information, refer to this Barcode Scanning in Pass Meds guide.
Strict Mode
When enabled, ALIS requires all orders to be scanned before their outcome can be recorded*. When disabled (commonly recommended), med passers can flexibly document even if an order has not been scanned.
*In Strict Mode, you can override the scan requirement only if you give a reason for why you are unable to scan the order. In Pass Meds, there is an option to click Scan Not Needed, and type a Reason in the pop-up modal.
Scanning Preselects Med As
Set a medication to automatically select an outcome when the scan is successful. Most commonly, you will set the default to Passed (which still provides the ability to update for Refused, Adverse Reaction, or Other).
When enabled, the Pass Meds page employs an auto-scrolling feature designed to navigate you directly to the order you just scanned:
Scanner Model
This will be selected by the ALIS team when completing the initial testing and enablement process.
The dropdown menu contains three scanner options, and the make/model may not be an exact match for what is used at your community. The most important thing to consider is the scanner type (e.g., 1D vs. 2D).
